Schemas can be both simple and complicated set of actions that can vary in humans. It is easier to read these development patterns in a child than an adult, as the adult will have more complicated schema patterns. The theory given basically focusses on the development of children and not general learning. It focusses on the overall development process and is not centered on any specific behaviors, which can be marked by gauging discrete qualitative differences and distinctive development of stages. What is assimilation vs accommodation? Through Piaget's theory of cognitive development, it can be implied that there are two processes, assimilation and accommodation that work simultaneously in cognitive development. The cognitive growth that occurs is because of the continuous intertwining of both assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation takes place when some sort of modification takes place by adding some new information that upgrades our existing schemas. It retains the fresh information or experience, which arrives giving additional input to the things that already exist in our minds.

Accommodation was explained by Jean Piaget, who propounded Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Accommodation is the term that discusses regarding the adaptation process in humans. During this course, there is adjusting and modification of the current set of schemas and notions, which result because of new learning or fresh experiences. During this new learning phase, new set of schemas can be formed during the process. A common example to explain the accommodation can be the case of children. A child while growing up keeps learning new things. There will be a stage when the child develops the understanding for four-legged animals as dogs. At that point, if the child is taken to the zoo, he/ she may consider all the animals with four legs as dogs. Eventually, when the child discovers that there are other animals with four legs, then his set of schema will change and accommodate this new set of information. Thus, accommodation is the cognitive process where the current schemas, perceptions, and understanding constantly revise to give room to new information that is to be incorporated.

On the other hand, accommodation takes place when there is reorganization or modification that takes place in what is already known to give space to the new information to fit in better. These modifications take place because environmental factors around people keep changing and keep altering the perceptions. The two processes are carried out throughout the life as the person adapts to the surrounding and gathers more experience in a more intricate way. Assimilation is the process where setting and environment around is changed so that it can be adjusted in the previously formed cognitive structures. Accommodation takes place by bringing a change in cognitive structures and allowing accepted changes from the environment in the present set of schema. Hence, both these processes are used alternately and in conjunction throughout the life. Assimilation occurs when an infant learns to suck a bottle as he/she develops the sucking schema during breast feeding from the mother. Accommodation will take place when the infant has to modify the sucking schema developed differently on a pacifier and then for sucking on a bottle.

Frederick Leong explained the approach adopted for cultural accommodation: A person's acculturation level and the cultural biases that can hamper validation of culture must be identified. There must be culture-specific ideas and concepts that are analogous to a person's host culture, so that accommodation can take place smoothly. Finally, the accommodated theory should be examined to draw a comparison with the unaccommodated theory. This will help to determine the factors that separate the two theories with regard to their efficacy, understanding, and appropriateness. An example to understand this approach can be when a boy raised in a rural setting re-locates to a highly urbanized big city with his father.
