I found a private driver in Negombo to take me around the North and Central parts of the island for 5 days, each day staying at a different town, and he was knowledgable on where to stay and eat. So while its not my favourite part of Sri Lanka, its a good place to start if you are travelling around the island independantly. And what a relief it is, arriving by air, or contemplating an early flight out, to know that you will be spending the night not in the congested tangle of Colombo, but seaside, with German package tourists and a passable prawn curry and a reasonably priced hotel with ocean breezes. Is Negombo historic? Probably. Does it have churches and minor sights aplenty? Almost certainly. But who cares? Grab a cold one and shake off that jet-lag: you've arrived.
